The Girl Whose Curly Brown Hair

exploded into a flock of birds
set free from cages, whose hands were small
and inquisitive white mice, whose long legs
dangled from leafy branches and whose eyes
looked inside windows they weren't supposed to,
the girl whose curly brown hair got caught
in the space between thunder and lightning
and whose red stockings on her feet
fell off and were carried away by squirrels
to line their nests, the girl we all dream
we once were, the girl we might have been,
the girl we still might be, that girl!
