Sandpapered Fingertips

She works to get down to the nerve,
to the fireglow of heart
pulsing in each fingertip—
to reach the five flames
that leap toward a secret combination.
Tingling, the peeled sense of touch
could open more than one door.
She craves a little less skin
between herself and the world,
a falling into place,
an almost-inaudible answering click,
or an explosion.
