the sand is decorated
with these limp streamers
like dull tinsel discarded
from some damp festival
or the ocean's cast-off clothing
a jumble of secondhand fashion:
the revealing rubber straps
of a lime-green bikini
a dirty brown hula-skirt
sticky with sand and slime
a feather-fringed scarf
a brooch of glistening jelly
the matted wig of a sea witch
a mermaid's leather undergarments
but I am after something simple, something cool;
dress myself in the crisp, clean fabric of a wave
