(couldn’t be) saved more

how many more angels
can we fit in this shithole?
it’s a shame how we’ve
mismanaged the truth
& gone back to the cave
to learn how to behave
around our elders
back then it was all
about pleasurecraft
buttocks & networking
ersatz enlightenment
radio no alarm yes
but fifty or so fillings later
& it’s all about the love
& those big magic questions
the starlings stiffening
above us on the wires
returning more of our verdicts
so now I pay double for everything
& let everyone who wants to
cut in front of me
though even I had to eventually
draw the line at more caroling
& the bit about elves.
